Paul McGrath admits he didn't like Sir Alex Ferguson after Manchester United exit

Paul McGrath admitted he didn't like Sir Alex Ferguson during their time at Manchester United.

McGrath played under Ferguson at Old Trafford for three-years between 1986 and 1989.

But the pair had a strained relationship, with Ireland legend McGrath part of a drinking culture at the club that Ferguson wanted to eradicate.

McGrath would leave the club for Aston Villa in 1989 and enjoy the best years of his career, winning the PFA Players' Player of the Year award in 1993.

The Dubliner has admitted that his United exit and Ferguson's treatment of him left a bitter taste, although the animosity he felt towards the manager disappeared once he hung up his boots.

Speaking ahead of United and Villa going head-to-head, McGrath, 64, said: "Obviously Sir Alex Ferguson didn't like the way we were living our lives and stuff.

"I think it's great now. To be honest, he brought me back to work there after I'd quit football, and stuff like that.

"I didn't particularly like Sir Alex to be honest but he was man enough to bring me back then, when I finished my career and stuff like that.

"He was brilliant to me, and he'd always stop and say hello to me, and shake my hand.

"He was a winner, and he didn't want someone like me dragging the team back, and even Norman [Whiteside] - I have to say, we did over do it, and I think we deserved the exits we got."
