Champions League record wins and losses as Brendan Rogers' Celtic suffer Borussia Dortmund bashing

Borussia Dortmund brought Celtic crashing back down to earth after the Scottish side had opened their Champions League campaign with a five-goal display against Slovan Bratislava, by putting seven past Kasper Schmeichel on Tuesday night.

And it could have been worse, had the Bundesliga men not taken their foot off the gas in the second-half, following an injury to hat-trick hero Karim Adeyemi.

He scored three times during a disastrous first-half for the Glasgow giants.

With the scoreline at 5-1 by the break, there were fears that they could end up with a record-breaking Champions League defeat - although 7-1 is pretty high up the list when it comes to biggest losses in the competition proper.

Already twice in this season’s new format, we have seen results that are among the biggest margins of victory, including Celtic’s defeat and Bayern Munich’s thumping of Dinamo Zagreb.

Here's a list of all the times a team has conceded seven or more goals in the Champions League.

8-2 (Six goal-margins)

Barcelona 2-8 Bayern Munich (August 2020): Played behind-closed-doors during the Covid pandemic, Bayern were 4-1 up at half-time and that scoreline was replicated after the break, with two goals each from Thomas Muller and Coutinho.

7-1

Manchester United 7-1 Roma (April 2007): Old Trafford was lit up by goals from Michael Carrick and Cristiano Ronaldo (both scored twice), Alan Smith, Wayne Rooney, and Patrice Evra.

Bayern Munich 7-1 Sporting Lisbon (March 2009): Thomas Muller marked his Champions League debut with a goal in this one-sided affair.

Dinamo Zagreb 1-7 Lyon (December 2011): Bafétimbi Gomis, later of Swansea City, destroyed the Croatian side with a four-goal salvo, with his first three coming in the 45th, 48th and 52nd minutes.

Barcelona 7-1 Bayer Leverkusen (March 2012): Lionel Messi scored FIVE times in this rout.

Roma 1-7 Bayern Munich (October 2014): Arjen Robben scored twice as Bayern put the Serie A giants to the sword and chalked up a second 7-1 Champions League win, while for Roma it was a second defeat by that margin.

Paris St Germain 7-1 Celtic (November 2017): Neymar and Edinson Cavani both scored twice in a depressingly familiar scoreline for Celtic and their manager Brendan Rodgers.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND 7-1 CELTIC (October 2024): A night to forget for the Bhoys.

9-2 (Seven-goal margins)

Bayern Munich 9-2 Dinamo Zagreb (September 2024): Harry Kane scored four, including two from the penalty spot, as the Croatians made a second unwanted appearance on this list.

Valencia 7-0 Genk (November 2011): A Roberto Soldado hat-trick helped the Spaniards crush their Belgian opponents.

Bayern Munich 7-0 Basel (March 2012): After losing the first leg 1-0, Bayern bounced back in style, with Mario Gomez scoring four.

BATE Borisov 0-7 Shakhtar Donetsk (October 2014): BATE Borisov had lost 6-0 away to Porto two games before Luiz Adriano’s five-goal display condemned them to another Champions League humiliation.

Barcelona 7-0 Celtic (September 2016): Another appearance on this list for Celtic and Brendan Rodgers, with Lionel Messi scoring his sixth Champions League hat-trick.

Maribor 0-7 Liverpool (October 2017): Liverpool recorded the biggest ever away win by an English team in Europe thanks to braces from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah. Philippe Coutinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold also scored.

Liverpool 7-0 Spartak Moscow (December 2017): Liverpool’s dominance in the group stages that year was underlined by a SECOND 7-0 win, this time over the Russian side. Coutinho scored a hat-trick and Sadio Mane found the net twice.

Manchester City 7-0 Schalke (March 2019): City cruised into the quarter-finals with goals from Sergio Aguero (two), Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus.
