Arne Slot brutally slaps down Ibrahima Konate after Liverpool star demands award

Liverpool boss Arne Slot handed Ibrahima Konate a brutal put-down after the Reds star claimed he should have been named man of the match against Wolves.

Slot's men travelled to the rock-bottom Midlanders on Saturday evening and came home with a 2-1 win. That was thanks to Konate's first-half header and Mohamed Salah's second-half penalty.

But between those goals, Konate committed an awful error which led to Rayan Aït-Nouri scoring an equaliser. He was then booked for a late challenge as he endured a difficult spell.

Despite his struggles, Konate was left incredulous that Ryan Gravenberch had been named the official man of the match by Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville. As he handed over the award, the defender made his feelings clear.

Konate said: "Sky Sports, Sky Sports, who decided who is man of the match? How is this possible? It's my brother, I have to give it to him. Milan I score, today I score, I saved one, what happened? You have to talk with them whoever decided."

It is fair to say Slot was not in agreement with the Frenchman though. Instead the Liverpool boss was left shocked that Konate had demanded he win the award and brutally put the defender in his place.

He told Sky Sports: "Konate? Ibrahima Konate? OK. Then he maybe forgot the moment that we conceded the goal. Maybe that was the reason why we conceded, he wasn't there at the moment because to say the least it was avoidable."

Slot was left furious with the manner in which his side conceded the Wolves equaliser. He admitted that the timing of Konate's error made life difficult for the Reds for the rest of the game.

"The goal we conceded was definitely avoidable and it was unnecessary. It came at a bad time because we had total control over the game," Slot added when speaking to Match of the Day.

"By conceding this way, they came back into the game and the good thing for us, is we immediately scored to make it 2-1. With only one goal making the difference, it makes it a difficult game until the end."

Liverpool have leapfrogged Manchester City into top spot in the Premier League with Saturday's win. But Slot is keen to keep his side's feet on the ground despite his side's lofty position.

He added: "Feels good [to be top], you want to be up there but it doesn’t tell me that much at the moment. If you look at Wolves they are down in the table but they played much better than that today. After 19 games, it’ll tell me something but not after six."
