The Malta International Fish Fest was staged in Marsaxlokk last Saturday, the Secretariat for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Animal Rights said in a statement.

The Secretariat said that the Fish Fest was a celebration of local fish and the work of local fishermen. It continued that many local associations and producers had the opportunity to exhibit their local products, with various exhibits related to the fishing sector, including the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Malta.

This celebration, the Secretariat continued, also saw several stalls of food related to fish and seafood, from lampuki pies, to the traditional aljotta, fish and chips, and even fish platters. It said that the people present also enjoyed a wonderful show of local performers and music, including the band Bernie and Pod, Sarah Bonnici and the band, as well as Sterjotipi.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said, along with Mayor Steven Grech, opened the celebratory evening in Marsaxlokk. Bugej Said said that the festival was a celebration of local fish which exalted the work of local fishermen who go out every day on their vessels to catch fish. She remarked that the Fish Fest has entered the Maltese and Gozitan calendar as it is not only anticipated by the fishermen but also by the public who eagerly attend the celebrations.

Grech expressed satisfaction that the government had again chosen to stage the Malta International Fish Fest in Marsaxlokk, and said that he supports the importance of carrying out such activities which raise the level of the locality, with a large number of visitors both local and foreign who come to the country and are able to see the daily work ongoing in the picturesque village.

Estelle Bonello Sant, Director of Operations within the Ministry, said that the commitment of the local associations, particularly of the Marsaxlokk Council, was essential so that the celebrations could be successfully staged and grow from previous years.
