Breakthrough in fatal Dublin hit-and-run case as DNA found in vehicle and suspect known to gardai


Gardai are confident they have recovered DNA from a vehicle used in a horrific hit and run that saw a man in his 40s killed.



Sources say gardai have also identified a chief suspect in the shocking crash that claimed the life of a man who was out walking on the coast road in Baldoyle, North Dublin when he was struck and killed in the early hours of Wednesday morning.



It is understood that the suspect is known to gardai and was recently before the courts - and is on bail. Sources say he’s also known to have been a suspect in a the theft of a number vehicles - and is associated with a gang in the area.



Officers believe that two men - a driver and a passenger, fled the vehicle after they struck the man while trying to evade gardai that night. It is understood there had been a prior interaction between Gardai and the vehicle - but the car escaped officers before the shocking collision took place.

The death of the man has sent shockwaves around the community of Baldoyle. Speaking to this paper, local councillor John Lyons said: “It’s a terrible tragedy my heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved him.“



Gardai have reported the incident to the Garda Ombudsman (GSOC) as a result of the prior engagement with officers in the incident.



Gardaí have asked road users who may have camera footage and were travelling in the area at the time to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
