Limerick hurler Kyle Hayes to appear in court on dangerous driving charge

Limerick hurler Kyle Hayes is to appear in court on a charge of dangerous driving following an incident in Cork last weekend.

Hayes, 26, is alleged to have been clocked speeding at 150 km/h in a 100 km/h zone near Mallow in Cork on Sunday and is due to appear in court at a later date.

A statement issued to the Irish Mirror by An Garda Síochána read: "Gardaí in Mallow arrested a man for an alleged road traffic offence on Sunday, 14th July 2024.

"The man (20s) has since been charged in relation to the incident and is due to appear at Mallow District Court at a later date. As this matter is now before the courts there is no further information available. Investigations are ongoing.

The incident occurred just a week after Cork put an end to Limerick’s bid to win five All-Ireland hurling titles in a row at the semi-final stage in Croke Park, with Hayes featuring in a Treaty side that lost by two points.

It comes just four months after the 26-year-old walked free from court after he received fully suspended jail sentences for committing “dangerous” violent disorder inside and outside a nightclub, during which he attacked a young carpenter, Cillian McCarthy, who sustained serious facial injuries.

The sentences followed a high-profile trial arising out of incidents inside and outside a Limerick nightclub in October 2019. In court, Hayes, of Ballyashea, Kildimo, Co Limerick, had denied two violent disorder charges, but he was convicted of the charges by a jury, which Judge Dermot Sheehan said meant he had to impose a custodial sentence, one he later fully suspended.

The judge imposed a suspended two-year sentence on Hayes for violent disorder outside the Icon nightclub on the morning of October 28, 2019, and a concurrent 18-month suspended sentence for violent disorder inside the nightclub on the same morning.

Hayes was found not guilty by a jury, following his two-week trial last November, of a charge of assault causing harm to Mr McCarthy, however, Judge Sheehan said “none of this would have happened if not for Kyle Hayes”.
