Son of Irish Big Brother contestant has remarkable sporting talent that could bank millions

Big Brother contestant Spiral’s son is a golf prodigy who wants to go one better than multi-millionaire Masters contender Rory McIlroy.

McIlroy, 35, who has an estimated US$200m Nike contract, has only come close at the Masters – but Dublin schoolboy Elgin Michael aims to win it. Elgin, 12, is the son of Glen Coroner, who was known as DJ Spiral in the 2006 edition of hit reality show Big Brother.

Rising star Elgin is currently playing in the elite Future Champions Golf World Championship in Palm Desert, California. And his success can be traced back to his grandmother Bernadette Murphy buying him a toy golf set when he was a toddler before she passed away.

Spiral, 41, told the Irish Mirror: “Elgin wants to win the California tournament, wants a really successful career, and wants to win the Masters. “Wearing the green jacket is his dream. He wants to be Masters champion. That’s the big one for him.

“He loves Shane Lowry and he thinks Rory is a great player as well, so he’d love to win the Irish Open and end up on the Ryder Cup. It’s all a surprise to me because I didn’t play golf as a boy. It’s a strange story how it happened. When he was born, I was hitting a few balls at the time, trying to play golf.

“Then, when Elgin was aged two, his grandmother Bernadette bought him a set of clubs for his second Christmas. She’s passed away now. Elgin never let the clubs out of his hand. I couldn’t get my head around it. He loved the game so much.

“I started reading books about golf when Elgin got into the sport and took him to the golf course for the first time when he was around six years old.” Spiral added: “His granny Murphy was a big fan, a big supporter. She was diagnosed with cancer when he was born.

“She struggled with cancer for 10 years, so she was fighting it all his life. She really helped him a lot.” Eilgin, who is the only Irish golfer in his category, competes for Golf Ireland's under-14 Leinster team and this year achieved his first hole-in-one at Corballis Links in Donabate, Co Dublin.

He then shot an impressive three under par on Monday that secured him a tie for seventh place, just four shots from the lead. He was chosen from over 24,000 applicants to be among the 750 junior golfers at the FCG World Championship in California.

The golfers are aged from seven to 18 and come from over 50 countries, making it one of the most prestigious junior golf events in the world.
