Man arrested for possession of military gear

A 28-year-old man has been arrested and detained for the possession of a pistol, cartridges and military rifle magazines.

The weaponry was found in the man’s house and confiscated.

A police press release reads that just after midnight policemen stopped a vehicle in Nicosia and upon investigation found 32 packets of cigarettes for which duty had not been paid.

The police then searched the man’s house, where they found the pistol, two military rifle magazines, a number of 7.62mm and 9mm cartridges and two hunting rifle cartridges.

Three army tunics, a gun cleaning kit, an army helmet and a full army kit were also confiscated.

The 28-year-old was arrested and detained pending further questioning.
