New Irish drum 'n' bass label promises all Killer and no filler as it steps up release schedule

There’s a wealth of great Irish music to be found in 2024, and plenty of homegrown labels breaking new boundaries and innovating with exciting new approaches.

A new drum 'n' bass stamp KillerBo Records is engaged in a hectic release schedule for 2024 and has some exciting projects on the go.

The label - and its lynchpin act Subduction - are the brains of Aidan Rafferty and Alan Pullen, who have been working together for many years and sum up their output as “drum ‘n bass, but drummier and bassier.”

Aidan Rafferty explained to Irish Mirror: "We've been making tracks together for 24 years, and since 2022 we've been learning the ropes in the DnB arena, and getting up to scratch with the cutting-edge production techniques in this genre. Our overall aim for the KillerBo label is to smash out animal tracks."

The pair cite an array of influences including "Orbital, Prodigy, Goldie, Dillinja, Andy C, Ed Solo, producers like Dj Crystl, Conrad Subbs. We're loving all the latest sonic madness from the likes of Amplify, Hedex, Hybrid Minds, Tobez, DetBoi, B_Origin."

KillerBo opened its account in April 2023 with Subduction’s Rock Hard Robot but stepped up a gear this April when it dropped a string of mixes of Subduction’s Kong. Hot on its heels came two more Subduction singles Mudaf***a and Flashback.

Raff said the time felt right for action. He enthused: "We just love drum 'n' bass and we've been making it for years and it seemed like a good time to get a label going. KillerBo is a place for hard-edged tracks, but as well as a punishing release schedule of our own tracks, we will also release collaborations and remixes with a wide range of artists."

Upcoming KillerBo projects include even more Subduction releases, which they describe as a mesh of jump-up, jungle and old skool hardcore, a liquid drum ‘n’ bass outing with an “amazing US vocalist” and remixes of some Irish rappers.

Raff added: "We chew on hard beats for breakfast, so we tend to use a lot of heavy synths and we're happy at around 174bpm. And in the interests of science and balance in this crazy world, we also make a lot of Liquid DnB. We're really excited about a Liquid track that's in the pipelines featuring an amazing US vocalist, and perfect for the arrival of summer."

The pair also promise to revisit their roots in 90s and noughties hard house, hard dance and trance with some fresh remixes of old classics. You can access the KillerBo catalogue on Beatport and Juno along with all the usual streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music. Check out their website for more details.
