75% of Italians are against nuclear power- poll

Some 75% of Italians are against
nuclear power, a poll said Wednesday.

Italy abandoned its nuclear power programme in 1987, a year
after the Chernobyl disaster, but the government's plan for the
Green transition feature a mixture of renewable sources
including 10% nuclear, which officials have said will come
through smaller latest generation reactors built by the private
sector.

The poll said that for 75 per cent of Italians, nuclear power is
not a viable solution and is not a valid alternative to fossil
fuels, because it is too dangerous and not cost-effective.

Only 25% maintain that a return to nuclear power is better.

The poll was conducted by the IPSOS research institute and
scommissioned by Legambiente, Kyoto Club, Conou and Editoriale
Nuova Ecologia.

It was presented in Rome on the first day of the 11th National
Ecoforum Wednesday..
