Canadian tourist dies in hospital after fighting for life for nine days following Dublin assault

A Canadian tourist who was assaulted in Dublin city centre just over a week ago has sadly passed away in hospital.

Neno Nerses Dolmajian tragically died at the age of 41 in the Mater Hospital after bravely fighting for his life for nine days. The Canadian national was left unresponsive after being assaulted near O'Connell Street.

The assault occurred at around 12.40am on Sunday, June 23 on Cathal Brugha Street. The man, who had been living in Laval, Quebec, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition to be treated for his injuries but ultimately passed away on Tuesday.

Four people have been arrested by Gardaí in connection with the incident so far, with two men having been charged and appearing in court in relation to the attack that has taken Mr Dolmajian’s life.

In court, it was alleged that the man was dealt what a detective described as a full-force blow to his face. CCTV evidence shows that Mr Dolmajian was knocked on the ground and received a "running kick".

Romanian national Ionut Danca, 24, appeared in court on Friday, charged with assault causing harm to Neno Dolmajian in the early hours of June 23. He was refused bail.

On Monday, Madalin Ghiuzan, 23, originally from Romania but with an address at Summerhill Parade in Dublin, was also charged with assault causing harm to the Canadian man and was also refused bail.

A statement from An Garda Síochána read: "Gardaí are continuing to investigate the assault which occurred on O’Connell Street and Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin 1 on Sunday 23rd June 2024.

"The man, aged in his 40s, who was taken to the Mater Hospital to be treated for injuries sustained during this incident, has died. To date, four men have been arrested in connection with this incident. Two of these men have been charged and appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice.

"As this matter is currently before the courts no further information is available. Investigations are ongoing."
