Alex Agius Saliba reinstated as S&D Vice-President

Maltese PL MEP Alex Agius Saliba has been reinstated as one of the vice-presidents of his European Parliament parliamentary group, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D).

Agius Saliba shared this news on his personal social media pages today, on Wednesday afternoon. In his concise online post, the Labour Party’s lead MEP gave his sincere thanks to S&D’s Euro-Parliamentarians, who he said have placed their trust in him to be one of their vice-presidents for a second consecutive term.

“More work continues for the benefit of all Maltese and Gozitans,” he added.

As the Labour Party’s sole returning MEP during this past election period, Agius Saliba was re-elected as an MEP nearly three weeks ago via a record-breaking 63,899 first-count votes for the Labour Party, narrowly breaking Miriam Dalli’s 2019 party record of 63,438 votes.

Agius Saliba was previously selected as one of the nine vice-presidents of the Socialists and Democrats in December 2021 after achieving 85% of votes from S&D’s MEPs.

The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, which features all three of the Labour Party’s MEPs, is the second-largest of the parliamentary groups in the European Parliament – only behind the European People’s Party (EPP). According to the European Parliament’s last projection, S&D is to be comprised of 136 total MEPs while the EPP is to be comprised of 189 MEPs, including PN’s Roberta Metsola, who is nominated to extend her term as President of the European Parliament.
