Taoiseach Simon Harris critical of GAA and calls on them to 'revisit' GAAGO paywall

Taoiseach Simon Harris has called on the GAA to 'revisit' their broadcasting agreement and says they have 'gotten this wrong' when speaking of GAAGO.

Cork will compete in a do-or-die Munster Hurling clash this weekend against Limerick but the game has not been selected for live RTE coverage. Instead, it will be behind the GAAGO paywall, available only to stream.

The organisation did not renew their deal with Sky Sports last year and has a number of games behind the paywall, with a match pass for tomorrow's hurling clash causing punters €12.

And Taoiseach Simon Harris called on the GAA to 'revisit' and 'reflect' on the broadcasting arrangements.

Speaking to RTE, he said: ""The GAA is an incredible organisation and tomorrow tens of thousands of youngsters right across Ireland will go out and they'll kick a ball and they'll take a hurl, they'll play camogie, they'll play hurling and they'll play football. It has always been a grassroots organisation and I think the grassroots are really, really, really angry and really disappointed and really frustrated that matches that the kids want to watch, that the family want to watch, are being put behind a paywall.

"The GAA really need to revisit this, they really need to listen to their grassroots members. That's always been their strength, and I think they've gotten this wrong. I think they need to reflect."

Senator Tim Lombart has invited the GAA to the Oireachtas to discuss the issue.

The season pass for the remaining 38 games is available on GAAGO for €78 while the site offers three for two match passes for €24.

The streaming platform is jointly owned by the GAA and RTE.
