Explore the Gemer region

It's an unfortunate paradox. The historic Gemer region in the south-east of central Slovakia is infamous for having the highest unemployment rate. In the past, however, it was famous for crafts, mines, ironworks and smelting plants, many of which don't work any more, but still represent an important historical legacy. In addition, there are unique protected areas, parks and nature that cannot be found anywhere else, such as the Muráňska Planina plateau that recently was named a dark sky preserve, Ochtiná Aragonite Cave, and much more. This is where the Objavte Gemer (Discover Gemer) festival comes in as it allows you to tailor your experience of the region. Find out more here.

Discover the only windmill in Slovakia

This Saturday, the Czech Republic will hold the first edition of the Open Mill Day. Although technically taking place in the neighbouring country, two mills in Slovakia near the border will be included as well. The first is the only windmill in Slovakia, located in the town of Holíč. Recently, it underwent a complete restoration and now is once open to the general public. On Saturday, it will be open from 10:00 to 18:00 free of charge. The second mill belonging to the Palárik brothers is located in the town of Skalica. It will be open from 14:00 to 16:00 and admission is free as well. A guide will provide information about the monuments. Learn more here and here.

A meeting for hiking afficionados

Starting on Frdiday, the Nitra-based tourist club OTI Slovakia is holding a weekend meeting for fans and supporters of the Club of Slovak Tourists (KST). The 15th edition of the event is a great place for the general public to discover what hiking in the region offers. It is open to everyone, even budding hikers and non-members of KST alike. Over the course of three days, you will be able to take part in several hikes and tours in Nitra and its hinterland. You can register for individual hikes here.

School of rock and other genres

After a five-year break, a legendary music festival that dates way back to 1983 is returning to the town of Trenčín, western Slovakia. Gympelrock is a multi-genre festival organised by students for students with the goal of providing space for beginner artists to break through on the scene. In addition to concerts of local and foreign musicians alike, you can expect discussions and workshops as well. The event takes place in the Kino Hviezda venue on May 10-11. Learn more here and read about what organisers have in store for the audience here (in Slovak).

Over the weekend, the 70th edition will take place in the Areál Vodných Športov pod Dubňom (Pod Dubňom Water Sport Resort) near Žilina, located in the unique bio-corridor on the river Váh. In addition to young talented athletes, seasoned veterans will also join in. Learn more here.

Graffiti 101 for children

A controversial topic, graffiti is usually a despised art form as it often involves painting property without permission. Not this time though.
