Man, 20s, killed in early morning collision with van in Co Monaghan as gardai issue witness appeal

A man aged in his 20s has lost his life in a collision with a van in Co Monaghan this morning.

Shortly after 6am on Thursday morning, gardai and emergency services personnel attended the scene of a crash between a car and a van at Moneygorbet, Castleblaney in Monaghan.

The driver of the car, a man aged in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has since been removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. A post-mortem is scheduled to take place in due course. This takes to 72 the number of deaths on Irish roads this year, an increase of 16 compared to the same period last year.

A passenger in the car, a man also aged in his 20s, suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash and has also been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

The driver of the van, a man aged in his 50s, also sustained injuries which are believed to be non-life threatening and he has been transported to the same hospital.

The road remains closed this morning to allow for a full technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, with local diversions in place for motorists.

Gardai have now issued an appeal for witnesses, particularly anyone who may have dashcam footage of the area around the time of the crash.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana told The Irish Mirror: "Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Castleblaney Garda Station on 01 666 5000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
