Wednesday: Season two of hit Netflix series begins filming in Ireland


Netflix has announced the start of production on the second season of the streamer's hit show Wednesday with several new cast members joining the series.



Wednesday, which is directed by Tim Burton, first aired in Netflix back in 2022, and follows the adventures of the cynical, tough and sarcastic teen Wednesday Addams.



The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday's years as a student at Nevermore Academy and features an stellar ensemble cast including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Gwendoline Christie and Christina Ricci.

The first season of the supernatural black comedy became Netflix's most popular English-language series with 252 million views, almost double the views for its nearest competitor in the English language, Stranger Things season 4. the series spent 20 weeks on the Global Top 10 and reached the Top 10 in 93 countries.



It was announced last November that production of the second season of the hit series would move to Ireland, with most of the filming due to take place at Ardmore and Ashford Studio in Co Wicklow.



Netflix announced on Tuesday that filming on the eagerly anticipated second season is now officially underway in Ireland, with several new cast members joining the series.



“We are thrilled that the entire Addams family will be enrolling in Nevermore Academy this season along with a dream cast of icons and new faces,” said showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar.

Renowned character actor Steve Buscemi, Doctor Who star Billie Piper, rising star Evie Templeton and The Handmaid’s Tale actor Owen Painter.



Meanwhile Back to the Future actor Christopher Lloyd, who starred in the Addams Family film and its sequel as Uncle Fester, Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley, actress Thandiwe Newton and The Sixth Sense star Haley Joel Osment have been lined up for guest appearances on the new season.



It has also been announced that returning cast members Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez and Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo will become series regulars on the upcoming season.



The first season of the Jenna Ortega-led series was shot in Romania from September 2021 to March 2022. However, it is reported that this location presented logistical challenges for production.



The hugely popular series could serve to give a boost to tourism in Ireland as many locations featured in season one, such as Cantacuzino Castle in the Romanian town of Bușteni, became popular tourist attractions after the show aired.



It has already been confirmed that Wednesday season two will not be returning to Netflix until 2025.
