St Pat's sack manager Jon Daly after seventh defeat of the season

St Patrick’s Athletic have sacked their manager Jon Daly on the back of yesterday’s defeat at Sligo Rovers.

The club today issued a blunt 55-word statement confirming the Dubliner’s exit, just six months since he guided the Saints to FAI Cup final glory.

St Pat’s statement read: “St Patrick's Athletic can confirm that Jon Daly has been relieved of his duties as First Team Manager.”

And it continued: “Chairman Garrett Kelleher said:“We would like to thank Jon for his time at the club, and in particular our FAI Cup success at The Aviva last November.

“We wish Jon the very best for the future.”

Daly took over from former Saints boss Tim Clancy after he was sacked this time last year, ironically after another May bank holiday defeat to Sligo Rovers.

Daly, the former Rangers and Dundee United striker, was initially appointed as caretaker before securing the job on a permanent basis after a run of good results.

But while he led the Inchicore club to FAI Cup final glory over Bohemians at Aviva Stadium in November, this season has been a struggle.

Saints made 11 new signings over the winter and the team has struggled for consistency, sitting seventh in the table and nine points off top spot.

Yesterday’s 1-0 loss to Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds was Daly’s seventh defeat in 15 league games this season.

St Pat’s have yet to confirm who will be in charge for Friday’s trip to champions Shamrock Rovers, who are reeling after their 3-1 home defeat to Waterford yesterday.
