Met Gala 2024: What the Irish stars wore on this year's red carpet


Irish stars were out in force as the biggest celebrities in film, music and fashion descended on New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night for the annual Met Gala.



Barry Keoghan, Andrew Scott and Eve Hewson were among the stars walking the red carpet in New York for Vogue’s annual fashion extravaganza, which raises money for the museum's Costume Institute.



The theme of this year's gala was "The Garden of Time," based on a short story by J.G. Ballard that explores humanity's relationship to creation and destruction.

The night saw the A-list guest list arrive dressed in plenty of floral and botanical motifs, as well as creative takes on decay and ruin.



The Irish were well represented at the iconic event, with a number of stars from these shores walking the red carpet in some eye-catching looks.

Saltburn star Barry Keoghan donned a sleek three-piece Burberry suit for Monday night's event as he made his red-carpet debut with his pop star girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter.



Keoghan and his stylist Ilaria Urbinati were inspired by the character of Count Axel in J.G. Ballard’s short story The Garden of Time and opted for a Mad Hatter-style outfit which saw the Dublin native wear three Omega watches, including a '30s pocket watch.



The Banshees of Inisherin star's Burberry suit included an olive-colored velvet tailored jacket, a black pinstripe wool waistcoat, a ruffled silk poplin shirt, and tailored trousers.



Keoghan completed the look with a black wool top hat and black leather oxford boots.

Irish actress Eve Hewson lit up the red carpet in a stunning dress by Irish designer Simone Rocha.



The Bad Sisters star, the daughter of U2 frontman Bono and activist Alison Hewson, wore a beautiful pale pink chiffon gown, which was inspired by preserved garments, such as Queen Victoria’s mourning dress, which Rocha uncovered during the making of her autumn/winter 2024 collection.



The gown was embroidered with silver beading, featured a corset bodice, puff sleeves and a modest train, and Hewson completed her look some long chiffon gloves, also embellished with silver beading.

Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan made his Met Gala red carpet debut and made sure to fly the Irish flag at the event in a suit designed by Derry fashion designer Jonathan Anderson.



Dornan, who walked the red carpet solo, donned a classic three-piece morning suit, which was made out of a textured material.



The 50 Shades of Grey star added a pop of color with a baby-blue vest and a red tie, completing the look with some baggy pinstripe trousers a gold brooch.



Vogue, the hosts of the Met Gala, dubbed Dornan's look as "grandpa core".

Cork native Alison Oliver also made her Met Gala debut on Monday as she hit the red carpet in a sparkling black suit.



The 26-year-old donned high-high bejewelled boots to complement her long oversized blazer, teamed with a chic cape, adorned with intricate materials of all different fabrics.



Oliver made sure to represent Ireland at Monday's event as she partnered with Irish beauty brand Sculpted by Aimee for her makeup on the night.



Oliver is one of Ireland's fastest rising stars, having earned her breakout in the 2022 adaptation of Irish author Sally Rooney's best-selling novel Conversations with Friends.



The Dublin-based series chronicled the unexpected connection between aspiring writer Frances (Oliver) and the husband (Joe Alwyn) of her mentor (Jemima Kirke), with Frances's friend Bobbi (Sasha Lane) also getting entangled in the love quadrangle.



Oliver most recently played Saltburn's brittle, tortured heiress Venetia Catton alongside fellow Irish actor Barry Keoghan.

Dubliner Andrew Scott ditched the classic suit on Monday as he instead opted for a Versace semi-sheer black mesh top for his Met Gala look.



Scott had his impressive arms on display in a sleeveless black vest with a waistcoat, completing the look with a pair of matching trousers and heeled Chelsea boots.



The All of Us Strangers was joined on the Met Gala red carpet by designer Donatella Versace and actor Jude Law. Law famously played played Dickie Greenleaf in the 1999 original film version of The Talented Mr Ripley, starring opposite Matt Damon, while Scott played Tom Ripley in the recent Netflix remake.

Cork native Samantha 'Sam' Barry, editor-in-chief of Glamour magazine, was amongst those making their way into the Metropolitan Museum on Monday for the most glamourous night of the year.



Barry, who grew up in Ballincollig, wore a stunning gown by The Atelier, which featured a form fitting corset bodice embellished with silver detailing, that flared out in a peplum hem over her skirt.



The skirt was comprised of layers of tulle and accented with floral appliques, while Barry completed her look with shoes by Jimmy Choo, a clutch bag by Judith Leiber and stunning drop earrings by Margot McKinney. She completed her look with a floral headpiece, while her hair was styled by Balmain's Eduardo Ponce, and her makeup was from Charlotte Tilbury.



On her Instagram account, the Cork woman thanked the team of stylists who had helped her put the look together for her grand entrance.

Irish designer Jonathan Anderson was one of the esteemed honorary chairs at Monday night's Met Gala, with a number of stars wearing outfits designed by the Derry native.



Anderson, the son of former Ireland rugby captain Willie Anderson, was appointed honorary chair by Vogue editor Anna Wintour herself, who wore bespoke Loewe on the night.



The Irishman's Loewe brand styled Jamie Dornan, Irish actress Alison Oliver, actors Jonathan Bailey, Ayo Ededbiri and Mike Faist, singer Omar Apollo, director Luca Guadagnino, actors Greta Lee, Dan Levy, Ambika Mod, Josh O’Connor, Taylor Russell and editor Lauren Santo Domingo for the event.



Anderson himself wore a classic black suit on the red carpet which he paired with vivid green shoes and a gold shamrock pin on his shoulder in a nod to his home country.
