David Casa calls on Central Bank governor 'to do the right thing and resign'

MEP David Casa onm Tuesday called on Central Bank Governor Edward Scicluna to resign in light of reports he was criminally charged over his involvement in the fraudulent sale of public hospitals to Vitals Global Healthcare.

“Your continued tenure at the Central Bank will irreparably damage the reputation of our country as a financial centre,” Casa said in a statement.

“It would be disastrous to have key figures in the country’s key officeholders that are meant to convince the world of the nation’s regulatory integrity while concurrently fighting criminal charges over their own impropriety.

“The presumption of innocence is a legal principle afforded to all citizens. But these are sensitive positions on which sectors of our economy and Maltese livelihoods depend and there cannot be a shadow of doubt about the rectitude of those occupying them.

“I call on you to demonstrate the integrity you were once perceived to have and to do the right thing and resign your post immediately.”

Casa also appealed to the President of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde to monitor the dire situation and to mitigate any reputational damage that would arise from Scicluna retaining his post while fighting criminal charges related to his term in office in the Joseph Muscat cabinet.
