Giro d'Italia blow for Irish cyclist Eddie Dunbar after crash

Irish cyclist Eddie Dunbar has been forced to withdraw from the Giro d'Italia after suffering injuries in a crash.

The Cork native was involved in a collision during the second stage of the race, with his teammate Filippo Zana and Dutch sprinter Olav Kooij also involved.

"Unfortunately following a crash on stage two of Giro d'Italia, Eddie Dunbar will not start today's third stage," Team Jayco-AlUla wrote.

"The Irishman was able to finish the stage, but after further examinations by the team doctor, the decision has been made to withdraw the 27-year old from the race due to a sustained injury under his right kneecap and bodily abrasions."

Despite the crash, Dunbar rode out the final 63km to be 5:56 down on stage winner and race leader Tadej Pogačar.
