RTE icon Eileen Dunne delighted by attention from young fans - not just 'grannies who watch the news'

Former RTE newsreader Eileen Dunne has admitted it’s nice to be recognised by young fans – instead of grannies watching the news.

Eileen took part in the RTE One show this year and was partnered up with Robert Rowinski.

The 66-year-old told how it took her a few weeks to adjust back to normal life after the show.

She said: “Yeah, it took a couple of weeks to get back to normal because it is just so intense, but it couldn’t continue forever. It was wonderful while it lasted.

“Yes. Absolutely a different audience, younger people and children. You know, ‘Hey dad, that’s the girl from Dancing With The Stars’ as opposed to ‘My granny watches you on the news’.

But Eileen said that while she has a few offers for other projects, she doesn’t want to be “too busy” after her Dancing With The Stars stint.

She said: “Who knows. Nothing major. If you asked me this time last year if I would do Dancing With The Stars, I would’ve laughed at you so who knows.

“I’ve a few bits going on but I don’t want to get too busy either. I want to have the flexibility, otherwise it defeats the purpose of retirement.”
