Off duty firefighter praised for quick thinking after saving man from burning car

An off-duty firefighter in Antrim has been praised for his quick thinking as he jumped into action to help save a man from a burning car.

The shocking incident occurred on Sunday evening on the Larne Link Road in Ballymena, Co Antrim when three cars had become involved in a road traffic accident.

The collision resulted in one of the cars catching fire, but thankfully an off-duty emergency worker in the area jumped into action to help assist in the situation, Belfast Live reports.

The dual carriageway was subsequently closed in both directions at KFC as PSNI, Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and the NI Fire and Rescue Service all rushed to the scene to help assist in the emergency.

The Air Ambulance was also dispatched to the scene, with at least one person involved in the incident taken to hospital, with their condition currently unknown.

On a post on X: NIFRS North said: "Fire Crews from the Ballymena Station have attended a three-vehicle road traffic collision on the Larne Road Link near Sainsburys roundabout.

"Colleagues from the PSNI, NIAS, Air Ambulance and St John's Ambulance also assisted at the scene.

"One male casualty was rescued from the burning vehicle due to the quick actions of an off-duty firefighter."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "The Larne Link Road in Ballymena is currently closed due to three-vehicle road traffic collision."
