Defense Forces Use Drones in Combat Practice

General Gábor Böröndi, Chief of the General Staff of the Defense Forces, stated that based on the experience of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Hungarian Defense Forces are enhancing the capabilities of their existing assets.

The Defense Forces are placing special emphasis on the use of drones and the prevention of drone attacks, and are exploring the use of depth-sensing systems.

Gen. Böröndi added that in addition to the armor-piercing devices, the Leopard tanks and the new helicopters’ destructive capabilities were demonstrated at the range. Gripen aircrafts dropped bombs on the target area to impede the movement of armored vehicles.

The General mentioned that tanks will remain crucial on the battlefield for a long time. While a decade ago, in a similar demonstration, they could engage armored forces from 1.5-2 kilometers, today’s Hungarian Defense Forces can destroy them with modern equipment at a depth of 10-15 kilometers.

He further stated that the Hungarian army  have contracts to purchase drones capable of destroying tanks and hundreds of low-cost drones.

Soldiers are obligated to use these drones in all training sessions to integrate their use into combat practice.

The Chief of the General Staff also discussed the exercise on Kossuth Radio’s “Good Morning, Hungary!” program, mentioning that on the one hand, there is no movement in the theater of war “loaded” with sensors that cannot be detected within a short time. However, he noted that combat also resembles the trench warfare of the First World War.

Gábor Böröndi referred to the fact that the Russians “caught” Ukrainian troops equipped with the latest Western technology on the Surovikin Line (southeastern Ukraine). He said that the Hungarian Defense Forces are now constructing a miniature version of such fortifications to practice overcoming technical barrier systems like these.
