Peter Crouch leaves Ally McCoist in fits of laughter with assessment of Jurgen Klopp's time at Liverpool

Peter Crouch joked that Jurgen Klopp's true impact at Liverpool is measured by the fact that they no longer sign players ‘like him’.

The German is leaving Anfield at the end of the season after a hugely successful eight year spell. In that time, he ended the club’s long wait for a Premier League crown, won the Champions League and claimed a whole host of other trophies.

However, Crouch amusingly thinks that his real success is having more talented forwards than him at Anfield. Speaking on TNT Sports, the former England forward said: “He’s just transformed the football club. From a place where the Premier League was miles away… like me playing for the club, that’s how bad it was!”

Crouch’s comments left fellow TNT Sport pundit Ally McCoist and presenter Lynsey Hipgrave in hysterics.

“He’s completely transformed it,” continued Crouch. “Won absolutely everything. But he’s put smiles on people’s faces, he’s charismatic, the football’s exciting, an absolute legend at the football club. And that’s a football club with a lot of legends.”

McCoist added: “The fact that he now gets spoken about like your, [Kenny] Dalglishs [Bill] Shanklys, your [Bob] Paisleys, people like that, tells you all you need to know. I’ll tell you exactly what he is, he’s a man of the people. He came to Liverpool and he got it immediately.

“He’s been a breath of fresh air for us. He had a go at us, he’s very opinionated. There’s a real warmth to him. Clearly a very talented coach and manager. But there’s a warmth to him that people can relate to him. It’s stating the obvious, but he is big shoes to fill.”

Asked about claims Klopp has underachieved at Anfield winning just one Premier League title, Crouch was emphatic.

“No. You’ve got to remember where the club was. They got so close under Brendan Rodgers and then it was a complete rebuild. He had players here that potentially weren’t Liverpool players and he had to clear that out.

“And what he’s done is compete with Manchester City on almost a shoestring compared to what they were spending. You think about what he brought in, no one was really thinking about Salah, Mane, Alisson was a great find. People were thinking you’ve overpaid. And he turned them into £100million players. He improved them.

“He’s done so much for the football club. When he does leave, there won’t be a dry eye in the house.”
