Sky Sports axe latest football show after Soccer AM snub as chiefs left 'gutted' by decision

Fantasy Football League has been cancelled by Sky less than two years after the broadcaster green lit its reincarnation.

The show was a reboot of the original hit series, fronted by David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, and returned to the air in 2022 with Elis James and Matt Lucas as hosts.

However, the programme's return has proved to be short-lived with Spencer Millman, a producer on the show, confirming via his social media account that Fantasy Football League will not be returning for the 2024/25 season.

He posted: "Gutted to say that Fantasy Football League won't be returning for another run. Big thanks to my brilliant production team, crew, writers, spotters, you were an absolute joy to work with.

"A massive thanks to all the sofa & phoenix guests we had over the 24 shows, we loved having you. Huge love to Matt, Elis, Mense and of course Lee Trundle but most importantly thanks to the people who watched it.

"I’m eternally grateful you accepted the changes to the original and sorry we won’t be making more. Much love and gratitude."

Fantasy Football League is the latest show from Sky Sports ' weekend offering to be culled. The broadcaster made the controversial decision to axe Soccer AM last year, ending the iconic programme's near 30 year run.

The show, which was originally fronted by Tim Lovejoy and Helen Chamberlain, was a staple of Sky Sports Saturday morning schedule for decades and was wildly popular in its pomp.

However, the decision was made to take the show's latest offering off the air - much to the disappointment of plenty of fans. Soccer AM was replaced in the schedule by The Saturday Social.

A spokesperson for Sky outlined at the time that the b to "adapt to the evolving needs of our customers" was behind the decision to cull the show. The statement in full read: “Soccer AM has played an important role in our coverage of football for the past three decades, and we continually adapt to the evolving needs of our customers.

"We now go into a period of consultation to discuss the proposed changes with our people. We are unable to provide more detail while these consultations are underway.”
