Scottish winger claims he has been approached to play for Ireland

Scottish-born Danny Armstrong has claimed he has had "a couple of conversations" with people in the Ireland set up about playing for the Boys in Green.

The Kilmarnock winger was making his case for a Scotland call-up, insisting he could bring something different to Steve Clarke's squad if called up for the Euros, when he made the claim.

Armstrong has enjoyed another stellar campaign at Rugby Park, with nine goals and 14 assists as Derek McInnes' men look to secure a place in Europe. And his impressive form has led to calls for Clarke to hand him a chance with Scotland ahead of Euro 2024.

It was revealed earlier this week that UEFA have agreed to increase the squad size from 23 to 26 which gives Clarke more wiggle room when choosing who will be on the plane with him to Germany. Armstrong, 26, admits he's not held any conversations with the Scots but has attracted interest from Ireland, who he is also eligible to play for.

He told PLZ Soccer: "I played back when I was younger with Scotland and I've not been involved since. It is an ambition of mine. You see players in that squad, they are a very, very talented squad. They've got some big, big players. I feel like I could bring something different to the squad if I was involved.

"I don't think there's many out like me out there who can offer what I can offer. You never know. I would absolutely love it. I've not had any conversations with Scotland. I've had a couple of conversations with people in the Irish set up because I qualify for that as well.

"It's a massive ambition of mine. It's a 26-man squad so you never know what can happen. There's two friendlies coming up as well. You can only prove yourself if you're there so I'll just keep working away at club level and if it happens, it happens."
