Three arrested for drug trafficking

Three men were arrested in connection with drug trafficking after being caught red-handed with drugs on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said that it received a report of a group of people in Swatar who were probably dealing drugs at around 2pm on Wednesday.

A number of officers went on site and saw two men matching the descriptions given to them next to a Ford Focus and a third man sitting in the car’s driver’s seat.  The police said that as soon as they saw the officers, all three began to act suspiciously, with one of those outside the car immediately walking towards another vehicle close-by.

The Ford Focus was encircled and the man inside it was arrested, and two other officers stopped and arrested the other two men.

The trio are a 41-year-old from Birkirkara, a 48-year-old from Msida and a 49-year-old also from Birkirkara.

While arrested, one of them became agitated when he was informed that he would be searched and began to resist.  A number of packets of drugs suspected to be heroin were found on his person.

At the same time, the police noted that the man who was sitting in the car had thrown some bags which had a suspicious substance in them out of the vehicle’s window.

30 packets of alleged heroin were found in total.

Magistrate Antony Agius Bonnici is leading an inquiry while police investigations continue.
