Conor Gallagher awkwardly responds to young Chelsea fan telling players to put effort in

Conor Gallagher was forced to awkwardly respond to a young Chelsea fan demanding his side's players put more effort in.

Gallagher has captained the Blues for much of what has been a miserable campaign. Their latest low point came on Tuesday night, when they were thrashed 5-0 by Arsenal, with Gallagher playing all 90 minutes.

The defeat leaves Mauricio Pochettino's ninth in the Premier League table, an astonishing 19 points adrift of the top four. The club's fans have grown increasingly angry over the course of the campaign.

During Monday's match, one young supporter was seen holding up a banner which read 'I don't want your shirt I want you to fight for ours'. Gallagher was asked to respond in his post-match interview, with the midfielder admitting his side had not been good enough.

"Well we definitley are putting the effort in. I know how much it means to all the boys. I know it's been said many times, but it's a very young squad with not much experience as a team in the Premier League," Gallagher told TNT Sports.

"As you've seen this season, we've had a lot of ups and a lot of downs as well, but we're still improving and working together as a team to get to that next level. Today was just one of those days where we were just nowhere near it.

"We need to dust ourselves off but also the performance and all the mistakes we made we can put right and get ready for the next one."

Chelsea boss Pochettino lamented his side's struggles to take their chances, though they did only have one shot on target. But he insisted that the Blues will bounce back next season.

"I think we started the game not so well. We concede the goal and then it was difficult for us to recover from this goal. I think in the first half we compete after 10, 15 minutes. We could not approach the game like we started in the first half," he said.

"We didn't compete the way we needed to compete and then when they scored the third it was easy for Arsenal to control the game. I think you need to be clinical. Like against Manchester City three days ago, we were not clinical and then today the same thing happened.

"Difficult performance because it is not nice to see your team play like this when you are meant to have full energy. After three days when you play a fantastic game against Manchester City, today we are disappointed with the performance.

"We are losing players and that has made very difficult, the management. But I think today, more than that, it was difficult to be in the game. We are talking too much this season and all the information we receive now is that we want to be in a different position next season."
