'Sheer evil' - angry Dublin dad slams those responsible for dumping 400 used syringes and blood vials in public park

A shocked dad who discovered over 400 used syringes and blood vials as well as other bio hazardous waste in a public park has slammed whoever dumped them there as “sheer evil.”

Stephen Redmond, from Finglas in West Dublin, made the shocking discovery at the weekend while walking in Northway Estate Park.

He said he was “absolutely disgusted and shocked” on making the horror discovery of the needles, blood vials and other bio hazardous waste carelessly dumped close to a wall in the park.

The park is popular with local children to play in, people walking their dogs and youngsters playing football on the football pitch.

Concerned for the safety of the children and people who frequent the area, Stephen then reported the dumping to local gardai and Dublin City Council - who sent a team on Tuesday morning to safely remove the paraphernalia.

“I was horrified with the amount that was dumped,” Stephen said.

“A child could have easily picked one of the used syringes up and pricked themselves or a dog could have easily walked into the area where they were dumped and hurt themselves,” he said, adding the dumping took place around 15 metres from the park’s football pitch.

“The sheer scale of it was unbelievable. There were over 400 needles, blood vials and other medical tubes.

“I initially thought maybe drug users dumped the stuff there but this is large scale dumping.

“Whoever did this is sheer evil. It had to have been done on purpose. There is no other explanation. It’s malicious.”

Some of syringes discovered by Mr. Redmond.

Mr Redmond said the syringes were found only 15 metres away from a football pitch used frequently by children.

He said there has been a problem with drug users in the park but he approached them on numerous occasions and politely asked them to move on, which he said they had no problem with.

“There were about two to three incidents of a couple of drug users using the park but there is no way they could have dumped this amount of syringes and blood vials. This is large scale stuff."

Stephen said he and a number of other parents walk the park regularly to make sure there are no drug paraphernalia dumped around the place as a result of discovering drug users taking drugs in the park - but, he said, the discovery he made is “off the charts".

“The odd time we have picked up a syringe or two but nothing like the scale of what was dumped over the weekend, that is off the charts,” he said.

He is now calling for an investigation to take place to trace back to where the paraphernalia came from and who dumped it.

And in a statement on his Facebook page to keep his followers updated on the issue after he posted a video showing the scale of the dumping, he wrote:

“Dublin City Council have sent a clean up team to safely remove the needles, blood vials and other bio hazardous waste.

“I sincerely hope whoever dumped them here is found, absolutely disgusting no excuse whatsoever for doing something like that.

“Our communities, especially public parks, need to be kept free of drugs.

"We owe it to our children who play in these areas.

“Many thanks to the clean-up crew from the city council for getting rid of the dirty needles and other waste, a job they shouldn’t have to do in the first place.”

An Garda Síochána received a report and the matter is currently under investigation by Gardaí in Finglas, Dublin 11.
