In total, gardai checked the speed of over 163,000 vehicles. Of the 755 detections, 530 were intercepted by gardai conducting high-visibility checks, while 225 were recorded by GoSafe.

With hundreds caught speeding in just 24 hours, it would appear that many failed to heed the well-publicised Garda warnings to slow down on National Slow Down Day.

In advance of the operation, gardai used broadcast and print media as well as its social media platforms to spread the message among people of driving safely.

A Garda spokesperson said: “The aim of National Slow Down Day, which is supported by the Road Safety Authority, is to promote safer driving practices among motorists and to encourage all of society to work with us to help prevent road traffic collisions and to ultimately keep communities safe.

“An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, reduce injuries on our roads and save lives.”
