More than 3,000 students to have free internet for one year

Approximately 3,200 students will once again have the opportunity to access free internet for a year, the Government said on Friday.

Education Minister Clifton Grima said that this measure, through an investment of €1,000,000, will benefit students who are eligible for a stipend, and have continued to study immediately after Year 11 (Form 5), at post-secondary level in government, independent and Church schools, and vocational schools in the MCAST and ITS.

The aid will be given in the form of €300 voucher which will start to be distributed in the last week of May, and will be redeemable until Saturday, the 31st of August. After this date the vouchers will not longer be valid.

The Minister said that this is the fourth year that this measure is being implemented, with an investment of €4 million has been made which has been made so far to benefit over 6,000 students.

Students will receive a link to indicate the Internet Service Provider of their choice. Afterwards, towards the end of May, they will receive the €300 voucher for free internet via email, which they will be able to redeem at one of the three internet service providers in the Maltese islands. (Epic, GO and Melita) enabling them to purchase an internet service for 12 months.

Each student can choose any internet scheme offered for this voucher value. The free internet voucher can be used to top up an active internet account that the student already has.

The Education Ministry said it is renewing the agreement with the three internet service providers to take part in this initiative and “offer the best on-the-go internet package to students.”
