Big Scottish Grand National gamble as Willie Mullins' odds slashed for trainer's title

There has been a huge gamble on a Willie Mullins-trained horse ahead of this weekend's Scottish Grand National.

Paul Townend will be aiming to make it a National double for himself and Mullins after they landed the big race at Aintree last week with I Am Maximus.

The pair team up with Spanish Harlem in the Ayr contest on Saturday, with Ladbrokes reporting that Townend's mount has been backed from 20/1 into 8/1 since the final field was announced on Thursday.

The six-year-old is currently vying for favouritism with stablemate and recent Fairyhouse winner Macdermott, who is the mount of Danny Mullins, as well as the Jamie Snowden-trained Git Maker and Anglers Crag for Brian Ellison.

Meanwhile, Mullins' odds have been slashed once again for the National Hunt Trainers Championship, with Ladbrokes making him just 1/4 from 8/13.

Nicola McGeady from the firm said: "All eyes will be on the Willie Mullins team this weekend as they head to Ayr with a formidable team. As a result, his odds have crashed to just 1/4 for the trainers’ title in what is expected to be a pivotal day in the race for the crown.

"Spanish Harlem’s odds have also crashed to win the Scottish Grand National since the final declarations, with punters backing the mount of Paul Townend all the way down to 8/1 from 20/1."
