Martin concerned about threat of Russian interference in upcoming Irish elections

The Tánaiste has admitted that he is concerned about interference in the upcoming elections.

Micheál Martin said Irish and EU support for Ukraine had led to greater risks across several different areas.

He made the comments at the launch of the National Risk Assessment for Ireland 2023.

During a press conference, the Tánaiste, who is also the defence minister, was asked if Ireland’s strong support of Ukraine following the Russian invasion had increased risks to maritime security and cybersecurity.

He argued that he was most concerned about the potential for interference in the upcoming elections.

“Yes, there are higher levels of activity, particularly on the cybersecurity front,” Mr Martin said.

“We've seen situations in the Nord Stream or other incidents that have happened in relation to cables. We are under increased risk as a result of that.

“There's also hybrid attacks, disinformation.

“I have concerns in terms of elections. We've seen in other jurisdictions clear evidence of interference through social media platforms. They could be more immediate risks.

“We have established an Electoral Commission in Ireland, something that I have been looking for for a long, long time in my political life.

“Now we have to build up the capacity of the Electoral Commission to be in a position to identify any risks to our electoral processes.”

Mr Martin said there have been no risks identified yet in relation to the upcoming local and European elections in June but the Government would be “alerted” to it if there were.
